LA Raqs: Workshops with Drake von Trapp

LA Raqs presents: Workshops with Drake von Trapp

hosted by Zoë DeRose

About

LA Raqs is proud to welcome Drake von Trapp for a back-to-back workshop day in Southern California! Join us on Saturday, March 7th at The Yoga Dance Co in Glendora, CA for an afternoon diving into the history, present, and future of fusion belly dance.

Something Old, Something New - 2-4pm

It’s a throwback! Delve into the world of old school West Coast fusion with influences from Jamila Salimpour, Bal Anat, John Compton, Hahbi’Ru, and more. This workshop is perfectly suited for anyone wanting to reconnect with their fusion heritage, or for those seeking out some vintage nostalgia.

John Compton Intensive: History, Choreography, and Culture - 4:30-6:30pm

This combination discussion/movement class will start with an overview of the work of John Compton, a legendary figure in the history of belly dance. After our discussion, we will spend the rest of class learning combos with John’s signature stylization and exploring what made him unique.

About Drake: Drake von Trapp is an interdisciplinary belly dance performer, teacher, and choreographer. As a teacher of students who primarily identify as fusion belly dancers, he believes in a holistic approach to dance education that foregrounds socio-cultural, historical, musical, and movement education. He is widely recognized for his research on men in belly dance history, as well as his advocacy and writing about dance and disability. While his happy place is noodling in the dance studio, Drake also loves baking, holding cats, and collecting bugs and bones.
